A Game of Thrones (Series So Far)

Series So Far

I've watched every episode of Game of Thrones thus far and, due to the rising popularity of my GoT focused posts, decided to post a few thoughts on the series thus far.

As far as being true to the book, I hear direct lines from the book all to often, and I couldn't be happier about that. I'm glad they're staying true and not exploiting liberties, but thats to be expect with the author, Martin, having a direct hand in the show.

The visuals are pretty much what I imagined, all the way from The Wall down to The Vale. There are some things that I imagined differently, though. First, Jamie Lannister. I'm still coming to grips with the actor chosen for his role, as I imagined a more flashy character exhibiting more braggadocio. Second, Theon Greyjoy. I didn't imagine him as such a frail, nerdy looking lad. For some reason, I had someone more resembling the series' Jon Snow in mind. Third, Syrio Forel. I imagined him as a more rugid warrior, but I think thats simply because I didn't understand the Braavosi. I like his character still. Some characters are definitely spot on. Khal Drogo, Littlefinger, and Viserys, for instance.

For those that have read Orson Scott Card's take on the series, I think he definitely went overboard a bit in his bashing of the show. I will agree on one thing though, the sex definitely got more attention than necessary. For instance, and correct me if I'm wrong, I don't recall the Loras Tyrell sex scene with the younger Baratheon in the book at all. I know it was eluded to, but I don't think it was given enough detail to have a scene in the show. It seems the writers wanted it to be obvious they both were gay, but I don't think viewers of the this mature show needed to be so spoon-fed they had to deviate from the story thats in place. That scene alone is the only major problem I have with the show.

With all these things said, I definitely plan to continue watching every week. Few shows (actually, none other than this one currently) have me tuning in every week and I think more people should get into it. Here's a trailer for those not in the know:
