Jee-woon Kim has skyrocketed up my favorite directors list. After watching this movie, he sits right next to Chan-wook Park, the director of Oldboy. Oldboy was a brilliant revenge thriller and "I Saw The Devil" is of the same genre. These two directors have a firm grasp on the ideo of revenge and its affects on everyone involved. "I Saw The Devil" puts an original spin on things though.
*Minor spoilers ahead
The plot follows a detective who's pregnant wife is murdered by a brutal serial killer. The detective "cracks" and takes two weeks off to pursue the killer. Now, you would think a movie like this would follow a path similar to....say.....Taken. Crime-search-search-fight-search-fight-search-final showdown. Definitely not here. The series of events are expected in the first 25 minutes or so, but things take a major twist early on and surprise all the way through. For instance, he finds the killer in the first hour. This a 2 1/2 hr movie....think about that.
I'll leave you to wonder what exactly happens in the rest of the film but, rest assured, it won't disappoint. Bee-tee-dub....this movie is not for the faint of heart by any means. The filmmakers spared no details in torture, murder, or any other scenes. I really hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.
